Goa’s Transport Department has taken action by filing a police complaint against the cab aggregator, Uber, for purportedly engaging in unauthorized operations within the state.

State Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho stated that the government never granted permission for app-based cab aggregators like Uber to offer their services in Goa. Once the department became aware of Uber’s alleged operations, they immediately sent an email, and subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the cyber crime police on Monday. Minister Godinho expressed concern about large companies commencing and continuing business without obtaining the necessary formal permission.

The operation of cab aggregators has been a source of controversy in Goa, as local taxi unions and private taxi associations have opposed their presence. Presently, Goa only acknowledges one app-based taxi service, Goa Miles.

State Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho clarified that the government had previously made a decision against permitting cab aggregators to operate in the state, and this stance remains unchanged. Despite the opposition and demand for such services, the government’s position on not allowing additional cab aggregators in Goa stands firm.

However, it’s worth noting that during the monsoon session of the state Legislative Assembly last year, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had expressed a different perspective. He stated that app-based cab aggregators were crucial for the survival of the state’s tourism industry and indicated that the government was not opposed to their entry in Goa.

This indicates that there might be differing opinions within the government regarding the involvement of cab aggregators in the state’s transportation sector. As of now, the official stance remains against permitting new cab aggregators, but the situation could evolve in the future with the possibility of reconsideration.

On Tuesday, Assistant Director of Transport Francisco Vaz told The Indian Express that the complaint against Uber was filed after the company allegedly started taxi operations without taking the required permissions from the Transport Department. “We have written to the police to initiate action against the company,” said Vaz.

There was no response from Uber to multiple requests for comment.

Shivendu Bhushan, SP Cyber Crime, mentioned that they received a complaint concerning Uber’s alleged illegal operations in Goa. An inquiry was conducted into the matter, and they have responded to the Transport Department, recommending appropriate action. As of now, no formal case has been registered.

Regarding the reports of Uber resuming services for airport pickups and drop-offs in its premium reserve category in Goa, the Manohar International Airport issued a statement on their Twitter account on Saturday. However, the content of the statement was not provided in the given information.
