In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ghazal Alagh proposed an alternative approach, advocating for a “better solution” rather than advocating solely for paid period leave for women.
Ghazal Alagh, co-founder of the beauty brand Mama Earth, has entered the discourse on menstrual leave, sparked by Union Minister Smriti Irani’s discussion in Parliament. Alagh proposed an alternative approach in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing concerns that advocating for paid period leave might hinder the progress of gender equality. She highlighted the historical struggle for women’s rights and equal opportunities, suggesting that pushing for period leave at this juncture could potentially regress the strides made toward achieving equality.

The discussion gained momentum when Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani, in response to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, clarified in the Lok Sabha that the government isn’t currently considering a proposal to enforce compulsory paid menstrual leave across all workplaces.
Possibly Impeding Progress Toward Equality
On Wednesday, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha raised the topic once more in the upper house, inquiring about the government’s stance on implementing mandatory menstrual leave for employers. In response, Ms. Irani emphasized, “Menstruation isn’t a hindrance but a natural aspect of a woman’s life journey. Proposals shouldn’t impede equal opportunities based on viewpoints of those who don’t menstruate.”
Ms. Irani also informed the Rajya Sabha that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has crafted a draft menstrual hygiene policy in collaboration with stakeholders.
